Description

The Snow Leopard Special is the focused route to the world's most elusive cat — a 9-night, 10- day winter journey by Indian Inspire Journey with five dedicated tracking days in Hemis National Park, the global stronghold of the snow leopard. It carries the full expedition method — professional spotters, heated valley homestays, careful acclimatisation — in a format one day tighter than our flagship expedition.

Hemis in winter is a world reduced to essentials: white valleys, blue sky, blue sheep on the slopes, and somewhere above them, a cat the colour of the rocks themselves. Five full days in the Ulley and Rumbak valleys — with spotters scanning from dawn, sharing intelligence across the valley network, and positioning you at every opportunity — give a genuine and repeatedly proven chance of an encounter with the grey ghost.

Around the central quest, the expedition delivers the full Trans-Himalayan winter: ibex and urial on the ridgelines, golden eagles overhead, red fox in the village fields, and evenings of Ladakhi hospitality by the homestay stove. Leh's winter monasteries frame the journey at either end.

For wildlife travellers from the UK, USA, and Australia who want the snow leopard experience within a ten-day window, this is the itinerary — with every high-altitude, permit, and expedition detail managed by Indian Inspire Journey throughout.

FAQ

How does this differ from the full Snow Leopard Expedition?
One tracking day — five in the park rather than six — making it the right choice for travellers on a ten-day window. The method, spotters, homestays, and acclimatisation structure are identical; committed photographers and maximisers should choose the 11-day expedition.
Is five tracking days enough for a sighting?
It is a strong, proven format — the majority of five-day programmes in a good season produce sightings, though the extra day of the full expedition measurably improves odds and photographic opportunities. Nature keeps the final word, which is the point of the quest.
What does a tracking day actually look like?
An early breakfast, positioning at valley vantage points as light arrives, and hours of scope- scanning punctuated by movement — a fox, an ibex herd, a distant pugmark trail. When a cat is located anywhere in the network, everything accelerates. Evenings are stove-side stories in the homestay.
How cold will it be?
Daytime -5°C to -15°C in sunshine, nights to -20°C — entirely manageable with proper layering, heated homestay rooms, and hot Ladakhi meals. We provide a full gear checklist and can arrange equipment rental.
Is previous trekking experience needed?
No — the method is scanning-based, with walking optional and always paced to the guest. Reasonable general fitness and sensible acclimatisation are the only requirements.
When should I book?
Early — the late-January-to-March season is short, expert spotters are few, and homestay capacity in the valleys is limited. Six months ahead is our standard recommendation for peak February dates.
Can this tour be combined with winter Leh sightseeing?
Yes — extra Leh nights for monasteries, the frozen-river atmosphere, or a Pangong winter excursion can be added around the core expedition. Indian Inspire Journey will tailor the full winter itinerary.
