Description

The Kumaon foothills compress an extraordinary amount of habitat into a short distance. In the space of a two-hour drive the forest shifts from sal and riverine grassland at 400 metres to oak, rhododendron and pine above 2,000 metres, and the birdlife shifts with it. This eight-day tour works that altitudinal gradient deliberately, moving from Sattal to Pangot to Jim Corbett, and it is the itinerary we recommend to travellers who want Himalayan species without the logistics of a high-altitude trek.

Sattal, a cluster of seven interconnected lakes below Nainital, has become one of Asia's best- known sites for bird photography. The oak and pine forest around Chafi and the Sattal studio hides bring laughingthrushes, forktails, blue whistling thrush, red-billed leiothrix, minivets, rufous-bellied woodpecker and both slaty-backed and little forktails into predictable range at  drinking pools. Even birders who normally avoid hides find that a morning here produces close, unhurried observation of species that are otherwise glimpsed in canopy shadow.

Pangot sits at around 2,000 metres on the ridge above Nainital, reached by a road through the Kilbury forest that is itself one of the finest birding stretches in the region. This is the tour's high- altitude section, holding koklass pheasant, cheer pheasant on the appropriate slopes, Himalayan griffon and steppe eagle overhead, lammergeier along the ridges, and a full suite of oak forest species including spotted and slaty-backed forktail, white-throated laughingthrush, rufous-bellied niltava and the striking Himalayan rubythroat in winter.

Jim Corbett completes the descent. India's oldest national park, established in 1936, records more than 580 bird species across its sal forest, grassland and the braided bed of the Ramganga and Kosi rivers. The riverbeds hold the tour's most sought-after target, the ibisbill, a grey wader with a downcurved crimson bill that winters on the shingle and is genuinely difficult to find anywhere else. Great hornbill, Pallas's fish eagle, crested serpent eagle, wallcreeper in winter and the full range of Corbett's mammals make this a fitting close to the itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 01 Arrival in Delhi

Met at Indira Gandhi International Airport and transferred privately to your hotel. Evening briefing with your birding guide on the route, altitude profile and target species.
Day 02 Delhi to Sattal

Morning drive north-east into the Kumaon foothills, or an optional flight to Pantnagar with a short road transfer. Late afternoon introductory birding walk around the Sattal lakes.
Day 03 Sattal Hides and Forest

Morning at the Sattal drinking-pool hides for laughingthrushes, forktails and thrushes at close range. Afternoon walk along the Chafi stream and the oak forest above the lakes.
Day 04 Sattal to Pangot

Morning session at a second hide and the Sattal Christian Ashram trail. Afternoon drive up through Nainital and the Kilbury forest road, birding as you climb, to Pangot.
Day 05 Pangot High Ridges

Full day working the Vinayak and Kilbury ridges for pheasants, forktails and high-altitude oak specialists. Late afternoon at Snow View or the Cheer Point slopes with the guide.
Day 06 Pangot to Jim Corbett

Early morning final session on the ridge before descending. Afternoon arrival at Corbett and birding along the Kosi riverbed for ibisbill and wallcreeper.
Day 07 Jim Corbett Safari and River

Morning jeep safari in the Bijrani or Jhirna zone combining birds, elephant and tiger tracking. Afternoon on the Ramganga and Kosi riverbeds for waders, fish eagles and hornbills.
Day 08 Departure

Optional early morning safari or riverbed session before breakfast. Road transfer to Delhi, or to Ramnagar station for the train, with departure assistance.

FAQ

When is the best time for Himalayan birding in Uttarakhand?
March to May and October to November offer the best combination of activity and comfortable weather, with breeding song and display in spring. December to February brings altitudinal migrants down to Sattal and is the reliable season for ibisbill on the Corbett riverbeds, but Pangot is genuinely cold. The monsoon from July to September is best avoided for road access.
What is an ibisbill and why is it a target species?
The ibisbill is a grey wader with a black face mask and a long downcurved crimson bill, placed in a family of its own with no close relatives. It feeds by probing under stones on high-altitude shingle riverbeds, and its plumage matches the grey river stone almost perfectly. The Kosi and Ramganga beds around Corbett are among the most dependable wintering sites in India.
Are the Sattal photography hides ethical?
The established hides at Sattal work on maintained drinking and bathing pools in natural forest, which birds use voluntarily, and this is widely accepted practice. We book only hides that avoid live baiting, restrict numbers per session and give the birds undisturbed access outside session hours. If you would rather skip hides entirely, we substitute additional forest trail birding at no extra cost.
How physically demanding is this itinerary?
Moderate. Most birding is done from forest roads and gentle trails, with sessions of two to four hours on uneven ground. Pangot involves walking at around 2,000 metres, where the air is noticeably thinner but altitude sickness is not a concern at this elevation. Hide sessions are entirely seated. We can adjust distances for travellers with limited mobility.
How many species can I expect on this tour?
Eight days across three altitude bands typically produces 200 to 280 species, and experienced birders with early starts have exceeded 300. Corbett alone has more than 580 species recorded. The Himalayan specialities rather than the raw total are usually what makes this tour memorable.
Can this tour be combined with tiger safaris?
It already includes one Corbett safari, and Corbett holds one of the highest tiger densities in India. We can extend the Corbett section to two or three days with multiple safaris, including an overnight stay inside the Dhikala forest rest house during the open season, which is the finest wildlife experience the park offers.
What clothing and equipment should I bring?
Neutral-coloured layers, a warm fleece and windproof jacket for Pangot, waterproof walking shoes with grip for riverbed and forest trails, and a hat. Bring your own binoculars, as they cannot be reliably hired in India. Photographers should carry a 400mm lens or longer, a beanbag, and spare batteries, since cold mornings drain them quickly.
