Description

The snow leopard is the most elusive big cat on earth — and Hemis National Park in Ladakh is the one place on the planet where seeing one is a realistic goal rather than a dream. The Snow Leopard Expedition by Indian Inspire Journey is our flagship winter wildlife programme: 10 nights and 11 days, with six full days dedicated to tracking the "grey ghost of the Himalayas" through the Ulley and Rumbak valleys, guided by the finest spotters in the trade.

Six tracking days is the number that matters. Snow leopard expeditions are won by time and patience — expert spotters scanning the ridgelines through high-powered scopes from dawn, reading pugmarks and blue sheep behaviour, and positioning you when the moment comes. With the world's highest snow leopard density and a winter season that draws the cats down to visible altitudes, Hemis rewards those who commit the days — and six days is the commitment that consistently delivers.

The expedition is built for comfort in extreme beauty: heated village homestays and expedition  camps in the heart of the park, oxygen-supported vehicles, and acclimatisation woven carefully through Leh. Beyond the leopard itself, the valleys hold Asiatic ibex, Ladakh urial, blue sheep, red fox, and golden eagles against some of the most dramatic winter landscapes on earth.

For serious wildlife travellers from the UK, USA, and Australia, this is the expedition of a lifetime — and with wildlife as Indian Inspire Journey's founding expertise, every permit, spotter, and high-altitude detail is handled with absolute precision.

FAQ

What are the real chances of seeing a snow leopard?
Higher here than anywhere on earth. Hemis holds the world's densest snow leopard population, winter concentrates the cats at visible altitudes, and six dedicated tracking days with professional spotters historically deliver sightings on the great majority of expeditions of this length. Nature offers no guarantees — but this is the format that gets results.
When does this expedition run?
The prime window is late January to mid-March, when snow pushes blue sheep — and the leopards that follow them — down to observable elevations. February is the heart of the season.
How physically demanding is the tracking?
Less than most imagine — the core method is scope-based scanning from valley vantage points, with optional walks of one to three hours to higher positions. Spotters do the searching; you need patience, warm layers, and reasonable fitness at altitude.
What is homestay life in the park like?
Warm, welcoming, and genuinely memorable — traditional Ladakhi village homes with heated common rooms, hearty local meals, and hosts whose families have shared these valleys with snow leopards for generations. It is comfort of the authentic kind, and central to the expedition's charm.
What wildlife will we see besides the snow leopard?
Blue sheep, Asiatic ibex, Ladakh urial, red fox, woolly hare, golden eagles, and lammergeier vultures are near-daily sightings — a full Trans-Himalayan winter ecosystem around the central quest.
What photography equipment should I bring?
A 500mm+ telephoto or high-quality zoom, a sturdy tripod for scope-distance work, spare batteries kept warm, and a wide angle for the extraordinary landscapes. Many sightings occur at scope range — digiscoping adapters are worth packing.
Why choose Indian Inspire Journey for this expedition?
Wildlife is our founding expertise, and our Ladakh spotting partnerships are with the most experienced trackers in the Ulley–Rumbak network. Every permit, homestay, oxygen-supported vehicle, and contingency plan is handled — you simply bring the patience.
