Description

The Chambal is the cleanest river in northern India, and one of the least known to visitors. Flowing through deep ravines along the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh borders, it was historically avoided because of its badlands reputation, and that isolation has left it with a river ecosystem in remarkable condition. Today the National Chambal Sanctuary protects a stretch of over 400 kilometres and offers boat safaris that are unlike anything else available in India.

This five-day itinerary pairs those boat safaris with Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, an hour and a half away, creating a compact wildlife journey that delivers both a genuine tiger experience and a river ecosystem of real conservation significance. The Chambal shelters the critically endangered gharial, a fish-eating crocodile with a distinctive narrow snout of which only a few hundred breeding adults survive worldwide, alongside mugger crocodiles, smooth-coated otters and the endangered Gangetic river dolphin.

Birdlife on the Chambal is exceptional and is the reason many photographers make the journey. The sandbanks host large breeding colonies of Indian skimmers, one of the subcontinent's most striking and threatened birds, alongside black-bellied terns, bar-headed geese, sarus cranes and a substantial winter population of migratory ducks and waders. Boat safaris are conducted in small, quiet motorboats that allow close approach without disturbance.

Ranthambore provides the counterpoint. Set around a tenth-century hill fort with lakes, ruins and dry deciduous forest, it is among the most photogenic tiger reserves in India, and morning and afternoon jeep safaris across zones one to six give you strong sighting opportunities. Day 02 Jaipur to Ranthambore

Day 03 Ranthambore Safaris

Day 04 Chambal River Safari

What is a gharial and where can I see one?
The gharial is a critically endangered crocodilian with an exceptionally narrow, fish-catching snout, and males develop a distinctive bulbous growth at the tip. The National Chambal Sanctuary holds the largest surviving wild population in the world, and sightings on a morning boat safari are usually excellent, with animals basking on sandbanks.
How long is the Chambal boat safari?
The standard boat safari runs approximately one and a half to two hours in a small motorboat carrying a limited number of passengers. Longer charters can be arranged for photographers and birders who want extended time at the skimmer colonies or dolphin stretches. Morning departures offer the best light and activity.
Is the Chambal river safe for boat safaris?
Yes. Safaris operate under forest department oversight with licensed boatmen, life jackets and calm, shallow water conditions on the sanctuary stretch. The river's old reputation relates to historical banditry in the ravines rather than the waterway itself, and the tourist zones are entirely secure today.
When is the best time to visit the Chambal and Ranthambore together?
November to March is ideal for both. The Chambal is at its best in winter when migratory birds arrive and gharials bask extensively. Ranthambore is open from October to June, with tiger sightings improving through the hotter months of March to June as animals concentrate around water sources.
Why does Ranthambore include lunch when other destinations do not?
Ranthambore safaris depart very early and return late in the afternoon, which makes a standard breakfast and dinner arrangement impractical. Can I book an exclusive gypsy instead of a shared vehicle?
Yes. Standard safaris use a shared gypsy or canter allocated by the forest department. Exclusive gypsy bookings, limited to a maximum of four passengers, can be arranged at additional cost and are strongly recommended for photographers who need control over positioning and timing.
