Description

Rajasthan preserves living craft, music and courtly traditions more completely than any other Indian state, and this ten-day cultural journey is built to reach them rather than simply drive past their monuments. Shekhawati, north of Jaipur, is the tour's most unexpected section. This semi-arid region holds the largest concentration of painted havelis anywhere in the world, built by Marwari merchant families in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and covered inside and out with frescoes depicting gods, trains, motor cars and European visitors. Many are unrestored and quietly crumbling, which makes walking through the towns of Nawalgarh, Mandawa and Fatehpur an unusually direct encounter with the past.

Jodhpur and Udaipur complete the journey. Mehrangarh Fort holds one of India's best museum collections and hosts Manganiar and Langa musicians whose families have performed for Rajput courts for generations. Udaipur adds miniature painting studios, the Bagore Ki Haveli folk museum with its nightly dance performances, and the puppet traditions of Mewar.
