Kerala Beaches: Kovalam, Varkala & Marari (6N/7D)
Description
Kerala's coastline is quieter and greener than Goa's, backed by coconut palms rather than beach clubs, and it pairs naturally with the state's Ayurvedic tradition. This seven-day itinerary links three very different beaches, Kovalam, Varkala and Marari, into a restorative journey along the Arabian Sea that suits travellers who want genuine rest with cultural substance rather than a resort compound alone.
Kovalam is Kerala's best-known beach, a sequence of three crescent bays beneath a red and white lighthouse. Lighthouse Beach offers the liveliest atmosphere, Hawa Beach a gentler alternative, and Samudra to the north is quieter still. The nearby capital, Thiruvananthapuram, holds the extraordinary Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Napier Museum and the Kuthiramalika Palace, all worth a half day of guided exploration.
Varkala is the most striking of the three. Here red laterite cliffs rise directly above Papanadam beach, with a cliff-top path of cafés, yoga shalas and Ayurvedic centres looking out over the sea, and a natural mineral spring emerging from the rock face. It is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs meet the sea in this way, and sunsets from the cliff edge are exceptional.
Marari, near Alleppey, closes the tour on a fishing village beach that has remained almost entirely undeveloped. Long, wide and empty, it is where local fishermen still land catch by hand, and its beach resorts are low-rise and set back among palms. An Ayurvedic consultation and treatment programme can be arranged at any of the three locations, and the itinerary allows a backwater houseboat extension from Alleppey if you wish to lengthen the trip.
