Goa Beaches & Portuguese Heritage Escape (5N/6D)

Description

Goa has been shaped by four and a half centuries of Portuguese rule layered over an older Konkani culture, and the result is a coastal destination that feels distinct from anywhere else in India. Its 105 kilometres of Arabian Sea coastline range from the busy northern beaches at Baga and Calangute to the long, quiet crescents of the south at Agonda and Palolem, and this six-day itinerary is deliberately weighted towards the latter.

The beaches themselves are the reason most travellers come, and South Goa delivers the best of them. Palolem's palm-fringed bay, Agonda's turtle nesting beach, Cola with its freshwater lagoon behind the sand, and Butterfly Beach reachable only by boat. Water is warm year-round, the sand is clean, and beach shacks serve fresh seafood grilled to order from tables set directly on the sand.

Heritage gives the trip its depth. Old Goa was once larger than Lisbon and its surviving churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus which holds the relics of St Francis Xavier and the vast Se Cathedral, are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Latin quarter of Fontainhas in Panjim, with its ochre and indigo houses and azulejo tiles, is best explored slowly on foot in the late afternoon.

Around these two poles the itinerary adds the experiences that make Goa more than a beach stop: a spice plantation lunch inland, a dolphin-watching boat trip off the southern coast, a sunset cruise on the Mandovi river, and a Goan Catholic cooking session covering vindaloo, xacuti and prawn balchão. Accommodation ranges from characterful three-star beachside  properties to five-star resorts with private stretches of sand, all selected for location rather than brand alone.
